It's Cold Out There!

Parents and Guardians,

At this time, Colby Public Schools is planning on holding classes tomorrow, Tuesday, February 16.  We are aware that you may have received information from different sources speaking to the possibility of rolling blackouts, etc.

We would like to let you know that we have been in contact with our power providers and have discussed the availability situation.  We have been informed that, at this time, Colby has ample power supplies, and distribution to the district buildings will not be an issue, barring infrastructure failure beyond anyone’s control.

We would like to reiterate that the extreme low temperatures are quite dangerous.  Of course, the decision to send children to school rests with the parents and guardians.  Our buildings will be heated and ready to receive students.  However, we do seriously caution everyone to take measures to protect everyone who is out of doors at this time.

Some points to remember:

  • If your child typically walks to and/or from school, please do not send them out on foot until the weather warms.
  • We know that some age groups feel as though wearing coats and long pants may not seem “cool”.Please do not allow your child to leave your home in shorts and remind them to wear a heavy coat.
  • When dropping your child(ren) off, please take an extra minute to make sure they safely reach the building, especially if you are dropping them off early. We don’t want anyone standing outside any longer than absolutely necessary.
  • When picking students up at the end of the day, please be punctual. We do not have adequate space in the offices to have multiple students wait for parents and maintain social distancing.
  • Bear in mind that at these frigid temperatures, frostbite can occur within 10 minutes of skin being exposed.

Please stay safe,
CPS Administration
